Group B Strep (GBS) infections which occur in the womb before labour starts or a women's water breaks are called “prenatal-onset” GBS disease which includes miscarriages and stillbirths caused by group B strep. Currently, babies who are born already infected with group B strep are typically classified as having "early-onset" regardless of when the infection began. GBSI advocates that the timing of when the infection began should determine if a baby had early-onset vs. prenatal-onset GBS disease. There are currently no protocols in place to help prevent prenatal-onset GBS disease although GBSI has identified several knowledge-based strategies which may help prevent unborn babies from becoming infected by group B strep or other harmful organisms.

Gr0up B Strep (GBS) infections which occur between birth to six days of age are called “early-onset” GBS disease. Early-onset GBS disease is typically prevented by administering IV antibiotics to women when their water breaks or labour starts, if they have tested positive for GBS or have some other indication to receive IV antibiotics for GBS. However, there is still a possibility that early-onset infections may occur in babies whose mother received IV antibiotics or even tested negative. This is why being able to recognize the signs babies may show is imperative for seeking and receiving prompt medical treatment for better outcomes.

Group B Strep (GBS) infections which occur in babies from seven days of age up to three months are called “late-onset” GBS disease. GBS infections which occur from three months of age up to 180 days are called “very-late-onset" GBS disease. There are currently no protocols in place to help prevent late-onset or very-late-onset GBS disease. This is why being able to recognize the signs babies may show is imperative for seeking and receiving prompt medical treatment for better outcomes.
