My son had his routine 8 week check up at the doctors and I happened to mention he had a severe dislike of getting dressed. Not thinking much of it really I watched the doctor check him over and as she checked his right shoulder he let out an awful wail. The doctor being alarmed by this suspected my son had dislocated his shoulder and sent me to the hospital straight away for an x-ray! An hour after we rushed to the hospital and the x-rays were done my baby was taken for an MRI scan because the x-ray wasn't clear enough! My son was sedated and I kissed him goodbye. I left to sit with my husband and wait to hear any news. Around an hour later a doctor came to see us explaining that my son has the strep B bacteria in his shoulder joint and was being operated on as we spoke to try to remove it.
When he came back from theater he was so frail and looked so ill. He had to stay in the hospital for over a month to make sure he had all the antibiotic courses he needed, but his little arms and legs couldn't take anymore IV's. It was heartbreaking! I sat by my son's cot every single day and when the 25th of December came I couldn't be with my 2 year old and 4 year old on Christmas Day because Sean was so sick. Time passed and he got stronger and began to look more like himself which was such a relief for all our family! To look at him now you would never know, but his right arm isn't quite as mobile as his left. We're hoping that the bug didn't affect his growth plate in his shoulder and he can make a full recovery, but only time will tell! We are just thankful that my baby that I thought was happy and healthy is actually now happy and healthy and we're looking forward to spending Christmas 2011 all together as a family!
