About GBS Vaccines
A maternal group B strep vaccine could save many lives. While still in clinical trials and undergoing testing, the hope is that a GBS vaccine given to pregnant individuals will help protect babies from GBS even before they are born.

There is still much to do on the horizon before a GBS vaccine becomes widely available, but great steps forward have been made towards preventing GBS disease in babies!
The IMPRINT network produced this animation resource explaining Group B Strep vaccines aimed at a general audience. They will also be translating the video into other languages available in 2023. For more IMPRINT GBS videos please visit imprint-network.co.uk/videos.
What's on the Horizon
Currently, only early-onset iGBS has prevention protocols in place - administering IV antibiotics (IAP) during labor and delivery to those who have tested positive for GBS. However, this does not prevent all cases of iGBS, including prenatal-onset, late-onset, and in instances where a mother has tested negative and does not receive IAP. This would change with a maternal vaccine, which would help prevent some of these cases. Explore our infographic below to learn more about the maternal GBS vaccine.
GBS Research & the Vaccine
GBS researchers are the driving force behind finding new, safe, and effective prevention methods for GBS disease. For current GBS vaccine news and research articles, please view our GBS Articles & Abstracts.
Many thanks to the dedicated scientists who have worked diligently over the years towards having a licensed GBS vaccine available hopefully one day soon! Fifty years ago, Dr. Carol Baker proposed a maternal vaccine for GBS. Read how her persistence is paying off in A Shot at Survival.

GBSI is honored to have Dr. Paoletti's firsthand account of vaccine history in the making in Hope for a Golden Anniversary and also his firsthand account of designing a test to determine if a GBS vaccine was safe for pregnant women and their unborn babies - A Critical Test.
Special thanks to GBS mom, Jan Ashcraft, for sharing her and her son's story and how she contributed to the vaccine research efforts back in 1985. Click HERE to read their story.
