I had a great pregnancy but my baby girl was born early at 24+5 weeks gestation due to blood clots on her side of the placenta. She weighed 1lbs 5oz and was such a fighter. She was doing great in the NICU. She gained another lb and was breathing on her own for 20 seconds at a time. We had to re-intubate her due to the mask breaking down her nose. The day after she was re-intubated her health started to decline and there was fluid on her lungs. I noticed she had a rash on her chest and mentioned it to her nurse. An hour later the redness had disappeared. She was checked for infection and the cultures came back negative.
The following day at 28 days of life things were getting worse. They started antibiotics just in case she had an infection and we were going to let her have a quiet day. She passed away very suddenly later that afternoon. Another blood culture was done and as we were holding her that night saying our goodbyes they were able to tell us it came back as GBS. I know she was premature and vulnerable to infections but I will also wonder if there was something we could have done to prevent this from happening. Would it have helped her if they started antibiotics earlier? She was in the best place possible but more needs to be done to prevent GBS in the NICU.
