Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The CDC’s mission is to monitor the burden of Group B streptococcal disease through active surveillance and to motivate, support, and evaluate efforts to prevent maternal and newborn Group B streptococcal infections in the United States and globally.

The CDC has published recommendations for GBS screening in collaboration with several professional societies since 1996. In 2019, the stewardship of these guidelines was transferred to 3 professional organizations, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
A presentation on the Revised GBS Guidelines by lead author, Dr. Karen M. Puopolo regarding the updated guidance by ACOG and AAP, presented at the International Conference on Group B Strep (ICGBS).
In June 2019, ACOG published a new Committee Opinion, Prevention of Group B Streptococcal Early-Onset Disease in Newborns. An interim update regarding penicillin allergy testing, categories for penicillin, and penicillin doses was issued in February 2020.

In July 2019, AAP published a new clinical report: Management of Infants at Risk for Group B Streptococcal Disease. Additionally, in late 2018, AAP released guidance that pertains to management of infants with suspected or proven early-onset sepsis.

In March 2020, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) issued guidance for standard laboratory practices: Guidelines for the Detection and Identification of Group B Streptococcus.
