My daughter Kaylee was born at 32 weeks and is currently 3 months old (1 month adjusted). When I originally got pregnant with her it was a miracle because I was told I wouldn't be able to have a baby (we tried for 8 years). Due to my medical problems and her being a miracle I was considered a high risk pregnancy. I was told my OBGYN took care of high risks as well.
My pregnancy was wonderful, on Friday April 13th I had a pre ruptured bag and was hospitalized on bed rest. I was given magnesium, steroid shots, and penicillin for 3 days. On April 17th my daughter was born at 8:48pm. I was given medication to induce. I had a vaginal delivery and the delivery went well. She was placed on 3 days of penicillin and about 24 hours of CPAP. During the month in NICU she suffered from bradycardia, apnea, and sat drops.
Once we brought her home she was doing wonderful, we thought. (Come to find out she always had trouble breathing, sensitive to light.) On June 22nd she was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital and admitted for GBS sepsis and meningitis. (She was screaming in pain, fever, throwing up and couldn’t lay flat. All came on like a light switch.) They treated her with 14 days of antibiotics (never did a scan of her brain) and told us it would be extremely rare for her to ever contract this again.
After the treatment, we went home on July 8th. She was still sensitive to light, and on July 22nd we had to rush her to Memorial Hermann Hospital because she almost went into cardiac arrest with a heart rate above 240. Once the ER stabilized her, she was transferred to PICU where we are still currently at. She has been diagnosed with GBS, meningitis, and sepsis once again.
This time the infectious disease doctor informed us that no matter what, she will always have a colonization of GBS in her intestines and she will always have a chance of it returning. We are in utter disbelief and since I was pregnant, we were never told about this. My daughter has suffered so much and we are so scared that she could have suffered brain damaged due to all of this. The current game plan is to do 21 days of penicillin and re culture the blood at the end of treatment.
