Italian approach to management of neonates at risk for GBS early-onset sepsis: update

7/10/2023

Dr Francesca Miselli
Picture
About the researcher
Francesca Miselli is currently working in Italy as a doctoral student under the guidance of Professor Alberto Berardi, a renowned expert in the field of neonatal infections, including Group B strep infections. Their presentation provides insights into the latest advancements and strategies in managing newborns at risk of Early-Onset Sepsis.

Dr Laura Maria Andrade de Oliveira
Picture
About the researcher
Dr Laura Oliveira, MSc, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Microbiology Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and since the beginning of her career, she has been involved in the study of the molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence potential of gram-positive cocci, especially Streptococci, isolated from humans and animals to improve the surveillance and diagnosis of infectious diseases and to inform control strategies and vaccine design. Dr Laura has been awarded with 10 national and international awards, being the most important, the International Veterinary Vaccinology Network (IVVN) Fellowship for women postdoctoral researchers from low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) and the BactiVac Catalyst Training Award. She was a member of the first cohort of the Future Leaders Against AMR Programme, and in 2022 she was appointed to be part of the ASM Microbe Programme Committee and was nominated an ISID Emerging Leader in International Infectious Diseases.

The Impact of Candida albicans on Group B Streptococcus Adhesion and Invasion of Intestinal Epithelial Cells

7/10/2023

Alexia Pearah
Picture
About the researcher
We developed a mouse model of GBS and C. albicans co-colonization and noted that the presence of C. albicans is associated with greater GBS burden in the neonatal intestinal tract. We sought to determine the mechanism(s) responsible for this increase in burden using invitro co-culture and co-infection of human intestinal epithelial cell lines. Our findings demonstrate that the presence of C. albicans is associated with upregulation of genes important for GBS colonization, adhesion and translocation in the intestinal epithelium.

GBS & the vaginal microbiome throughout pregnancy

Dr Alison Carey
Picture
About the researcher
Dr Carey has been working in the field of GBS research for over 12 yrs, with expertise in host-pathogen interactions and vaccine development. During this time, she developed one of the first animal models of vaginal GBS colonization. Her current research interests are understanding the interactions in the vagina that occur between host (mother) and GBS.
