About the researcher
Dr Laura Oliveira, MSc, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Microbiology Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and since the beginning of her career, she has been involved in the study of the molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence potential of gram-positive cocci, especially Streptococci, isolated from humans and animals to improve the surveillance and diagnosis of infectious diseases and to inform control strategies and vaccine design. Dr Laura has been awarded with 10 national and international awards, being the most important, the International Veterinary Vaccinology Network (IVVN) Fellowship for women postdoctoral researchers from low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) and the BactiVac Catalyst Training Award. She was a member of the first cohort of the Future Leaders Against AMR Programme, and in 2022 she was appointed to be part of the ASM Microbe Programme Committee and was nominated an ISID Emerging Leader in International Infectious Diseases.

Thank you, Jessica. It's so good to read a comment from a GBS mama, it means a lot to us!

Just curious as to what types of animals were the isolates from in your studies?

Laura Oliveira

Hi Marti, we have GBS isolates from cattle (bovine milk) and fish (mostly Tilapia).

As a GBS stillbirth mother, thank you for the vital work you are doing to save lives! Do you think that once pregnant women are getting the vaccines, they will stop receiving the antibiotics?

Hi Ashley, I'm so sorry for your lost. Yes, one of the goals of the maternal GBS vaccine is to reduce the use of antimicrobials among colonized pregnant women by making the vaccine the main preventive strategy to avoid GBS infections.

It will be good news when the vaccine comes out. 🤞 What kinds of food can transmit GBS to humans?

Hello Nadine, thanks for your comment. It was already reported an outbreak of severe GBS infections in humans that consumed contaminated raw freshwater fish, here's the link for the paper if you want to take a look: https://doi.org/10.1093/cid/cix021
