I went into labor at 38 weeks 6 days. I had no idea anything was wrong until I was at the hospital and on the fetal monitor. My son was never a very active baby in utero so I didn’t notice less movement than at any other point in my pregnancy. At that point I was told that my baby was in distress, his heart rate was irregular, and I needed an immediate c-section.
I went into surgery before my husband was even at the hospital. My son, Milo, was born very quickly and could not breathe on his own. I got to see him briefly before he was taken to the NICU. My husband was there in time to go with him. I didn’t get to see him again for several hours and they had no idea what was wrong for about 12 hours. His doctor decided to put him on a cooling blanket for 72 hours and he was on antibiotics almost immediately.
At 12 hours the culture came back GBS positive. The doctor guessed he had had it for about a week before birth based on his condition. I had been tested at 35 weeks and was negative. Milo fought for almost 2 days but we lost him when he was 43 hours old. He didn’t make it to 72 hours to get off the cooling blanket and I never truly got to hold him while he was alive.
