Born September 13, 2018 Early-onset Mother's GBS Status: Tested positive Gestational Age: 40 weeks and 1 day Age Harmed: At birth |
My son was born 8 days late and was born asphyxiated and with meconium aspiration and invasive GBS. He was in septic shock, it took 12 hours to stabilize him before being transferred to a bigger hospital. All the while we where being told he is a very sick baby and to take lots of photos of him - they didn’t think he was going to make it.
We then spent two weeks in the NICU. Everyday was hard getting feed back. How much brain damage had he suffered? We had 3 formal EEG done, 1 came back he was having seizures so they put him on medication for that. Turned out he wasn’t and it was just spikes in his brain waves. He had 3 attempts at a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis. That came back clear. We had to wait a week before he could be taken down to MRI to see how much damage was done to his brain.
By some miracle it came back clear. I had no idea how bad GBS could be. It’s a baby killer, my son is a miracle and so lucky to be here. I also look back at my labour and when I woke up with contractions I was freezing and shivering. I now know why, I had a temperature during labour. Thank god he came out when he did. If it was the next day when I was being induced he wouldn’t have been here.
