MATILDA-ROSE DAWN MACKENZIE - AUSTRALIA
April 2, 2018 - April 30, 2018

Early-onset

Mother's GBS Status:
Tested Positive
Gestational Age: 42 weeks 2 days
Age Harmed: At birth
I first was informed about GBS infection when I had my first baby in 2016, I was given the test result & a brochure that only explained where the GBS infection lived. I was never informed on what I know now. I was told we would have an IV of antibiotics at birth and it was crucial to receive that full course before baby was born. I asked what is the worst case and they did inform me baby could come out still born, baby could contract the infection coming out to then get sick within the hour of birth, if not treated would follow in death. I was never informed or given much more information. I asked endlessly about where it comes from, how it got there, how many woman have it and how many babies can be effected by it. I was informed that baby would be okay after birth as long as IV was administered.

Upon baby number 2 in 2018. I was told due to my previous baby no risk were being taken and I was to be treated as Positive. I didn't question it and in fact stated 'best be safe than sorry' .. Sadly my doctor went on leave, come birthing time I went to hospital with my books, my eldest and my partner. As we are preparing everything and my contractions grew I did noticed no IV was in my arm, I stated to the midwife that IV was needed! After a long - disagreement & a lot of uneducated midwifes - a selfish doctor - and time ticking , only 1/4 of the IV was administrated. Baby was not treated and despite looking really healthy and having good OBS we were sent on our way. I didn't know much more than I have stated aside from I knew something was wrong. Baby was checked a number of times, I expressed my concerns numerous times, even stating the GBS status to which 2/10 professional healthcare workers actually knew what Group B strep was!

Matilda-Rose was everything perfect, come 2.5 weeks of age, and my endless expression of concern I did get help from the 1 of 2 ladies that knew what GBS was, I was sent out information on late-onset. Sadly it was too late. 29 days young we had a wonderful day as best we could, baby was happy and herself, I was tired and not giving up. I was living rural at the time, and was informed if I continued to be ignored ring ambulance at the next next 'odd' sign I seen (those odd signs are what I now know to be the signs of an infected baby) - I rang 000 baby was lethargic and went floppy upon the ambulance staff arriving. That next 18 hours has scarred me and my partner for life, we will never be the same, the 30+ staff members involved will forever be scarred for that night, the lack of education on GBS infection, prenatal, birth & late-onset has inspired me to help educate others on the preventives that can be taken.

My darling daughter Matilda-Rose didn't deserve to have her life cut short, she deserved helped, she deserved care, she deserves to be here today & she isn't. My daughter along side many other children who should be here with us today!

Let's help to empower all on the knowledge of prevention GBS awareness.
