Mother's GBS Status: Test results not known at birth but had tested positive
Gestational Age: 38 weeks
Age Harmed: 14 days old
I was tested with a swab during pregnancy, but did not know what was the test for. I was induced at 38 weeks. The nurses ruptured my water bag and left the water bag to leak. I had dry labour. I was finally given medication for the pain. The pain got stronger and my beautiful son was born perfect and healthy and was discharged the next day,
Then on the 14th day at 8:00 at night my baby began to cry and groan. He had a temperature so my husband and I carried him to the hospital. When we reached there they did some tests on his blood and found there is an infection in his blood so they would have to do a lumbar puncture. My baby started to get worse and he started to bring up blood through his nose and mouth. His heart started to fail I kept praying to God to protect my baby. Three times his heart gave up and then the doctors said they could not do any more and he died. I felt all hope was gone. I did not even have money to bury my son, but by the grace of God the money came so had a funeral for him. He was like an angel to me.
I cry every day asking God why, I don't understand why the autopsy said he died of septic meningitis. The doctors had a meeting with us trying to figure out how Jemuel could have gotten this illness and when one of the doctors went through my antenatal notes he saw where I had done a test with a swab. He he had to go through the lab report to find the results and he found out that I had tested positive for group B strep. I did not know what that was. I thought that I was sick and he told me that this is what may have caused my baby to get a late onset of GBS. Then I started to do some research about GBS. So I was not treated for GBS and everyday I grieve for my child depending on God's strength every day of my life. We still have another meeting with the doctors .
