I was admitted for induction due to low fluid which I had slowly been leaking. After a 36 hour labor, I delivered Jacob who then began exhibiting respiratory distress. He coded and was intubated and air vac'd to a level 3 NICU. After arriving at St. Joseph's NICU in Phoenix, he declined and declined. They put him on ECMO as a last resort and sent up the chaplain to pray with my husband and I as it did not look good. He was given less than a 20% chance of survival and at one point the doctor said he wouldn't make it through the night. His echo then came back that his heart was good so his chances began to improve.
Two days into ECMO the machine malfunctioned because of a blood clot and stopped out of nowhere. They performed an emergency surgery to remove the clotted circuit and replace it with an arterial and venous circuit in his neck. Surgery was successful and he was on ECMO a total of 10 days and extubated after 3 weeks. 35 days total on the NICU and after many follow ups with specialists and tests, I am glad to say he made a 100% recovery. No permanent damage and all issues resolved! :) He is a miracle baby and we found out that I was pregnant again right after we got him home and 11 months after Jacob was born we gave birth to his brother Joseph :) We are very blessed.
