I was tested for GBS at 37 weeks, my results came back negative. I was induced and my cervix dilated very slowly. My water was broken at 11 a.m. and I was in extreme pain come 8:30 pm. I began having chills and felt feverish, my teeth were chattering, and no one checked my temperature until after our daughter was born.
She was perfect. My first baby was finally in my arms at 10:32 p.m. They began giving me antibiotics due to fever. She was taken to the nursery for her bath and that is when things became clear. She couldn’t bring her temperature back up after her bath. She began having shallow breathing, and her color quickly became grey. She was admitted into NICU and began antibiotics. They ran a series of test to figure out what was happening.
She continued antibiotics and by day 2 we got some answers. She had Group B strep infection, pneumonia. I had so many questions, I didn’t understand how if I had tested negative? Why wasn’t there a rapid test when admitted for induction? Will my baby get to come home with me? I wish someone had told me how serious this infection was.
Our daughter stayed in NICU for 2 weeks, on September 25th we brought our baby girl home, infection free. Our miracle. I want to help other parents to be educated on GBS, I want to save them from the questions, and I want them to be well aware of the signs and symptoms, it could save their babies life. Isabella is now a healthy 5 year old. We are forever grateful for our miracle.
