We delivered a full-term 6lb. 13oz. baby boy just a couple of hours past his daddy's birthday. His Apgar scale was normal at birth, but we were soon told he needed oxygen. Just a few short hours later his bloodwork came back as positive for GBS. I tested negative so we were not expecting this at all. We then had to watch as our newborn needed to be stabilized enough to be flown to a Children's hospital.
On arrival he showed severe signs of RDS and we were asked to give permission for him to be placed on ECMO as a last-ditch effort to save him and give his body rest. Unfortunately he developed a cerebral hemorrhage less than 3 days later and was decanulated. He was then placed on a vent and began to show signs of improvement 4 days later. He continued his uphill battle and we were able to take him home 33 days after he was born.
