Late-onset

Mother's GBS Status:
Tested positive
Gestational Age:
37 weeks (c-section)
Age Harmed:
3 weeks of age

I was told at 6 months into my pregnancy I tested positive for GBS, that I had nothing to worry about because I was having a planned cesarean and by law they don’t have to treat you because the bacteria is in the vaginal area and not the abdomen. So to make me feel better because I was worried my doctor still treated me and gave me antibiotics hours before my cesarean. My son Carlos was born healthy and not a single problem.

Three weeks later things turned very bad!! Carlos began to run a fever, moan, and wouldn’t eat. I was told to immediately get him to the ER; by the time we got there he was lifeless. My baby boy was leaving us. So many doctors came into the room running all kinds of test and determined he had developed GBS Meningitis. He was rushed to PICU and we were told if he survived through the night he would be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life, never being able to see, walk, or talk because the Meningitis had done so much damage to his brain. and caused visual impairment (legally blind), hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, epilepsy, sleep apnea and would cause developmental delays,

He remained in the hospital for 2 wks and came home on a penicillin pump. The next 6 yrs of his life would be a challenge and test of our faith, but God! He is still in the MIRACLE working business!! My son is a survivor and fighter! He will be turning 16 yrs old in October and is walking, talking, and seeing. He’s doing everything doctors said he wouldn’t. They can’t even believe it when they see him. I give all the praise, glory, and honor to Jesus Christ for being the ultimate source of his healing. Keep the faith and never give up! All things are possible through Christ!! GET TESTED!! #GBSisaBIGdeal!
