I had a wonderful pregnancy. I did test positive for strep B but was told I just needed to get to the hospital in time to get two doses of antibiotics before delivering.
Then, 5 days before my due date my blood pressure started running high. My urine was tested for protein and it was determined after several more days, monitoring of the baby, and more tests, I was now considered preeclampsia.
I was induced on my due date. My water broke that night before midnight. I ended up being in labor for almost 24 hours and pushed for four hours. Sometime between labor and delivery I began running a fever, despite the two rounds of antibiotics. I was also on magnesium for the preeclampsia so things got pretty blurry.
Azalea was born 8:01 pm that evening and wasn’t breathing well or doing well upon delivery. Between the magnesium and that GBS ended up infecting the membranes, she needed help breathing. Once they had her breathing on her own well enough, it was determined she had been infected as well. We ended up with a seven day hospital stay while she received two types of antibiotics. Her blood sugar levels were an issue for a bit too but luckily everything turned out okay.
I’m still struggling with our whole birth situation. It could have turned out much worse and I feel fortunate to have my healthy baby girl with me almost 10 months later. Testing positive for GBS is a lot more serious than the OBGYN told me.
