Aurora was born @ 1:25pm and appeared perfectly healthy. I was given antibiotics for Strep B during delivery so I assumed that was not an issue. Five hours later a nurse that was checking in on us told me that my daughter looked pale, gray and ill so I was told she would have to go to the nursery to be checked and to stay over night with heat lamps.
I was very upset not to have her with me but I wanted her to be okay. I was told the following day that her x-rays showed she had severe pneumonia and she needed to have 3-5 days of antibiotics and would have to remain in the hospital. I was discharged the following day, went home to an empty nursery, and cried for days.
I was then told she would need a lumbar puncture to check for meningitis. I couldn't even stand to think of my tiny baby girl getting a needle in her back. :( I was then told that she had to remain in the hospital a full 7 days to finish the antibiotics. She finally was able to come home on Mother's Day. It's been 3 weeks and I still worry about any possible side effects.
My pediatrician told me that many people are unaware of how deadly this is and that Aurora could have easily died the first night. I thank God there was an angel watching over her...
I'm sorry for all of the losses and injuries I have read about on this site. I want to thank everyone who took the time to post their story.
