Born November 3, 2002 Prenatal-onset Mother's GBS Status: Tested positive Gestational Age: 36 weeks Age Harmed: Born premature at 36 weeks of pregnancy |
I became pregnant with my first daughter at the age of 18. My pregnancy developed at a healthy rate with no complications. At some point I was tested for GBS, but not sure exactly when. I thought it was just routine, along with all the other testing. Not once did they ever tell me the seriousness of GBS or possible complications. I was only given a card to keep on me in case of emergency, letting anyone know that I was RH Negative and had GBS.
At 34 weeks I went in for my regular checkup. I had begun noticing more intense pain in my lower back and slight vaginal discharge. When my doctor examined me, she said that I was dilated to 2 cm and felt as if I was already having contractions. They determined that I was indeed having preterm labor, put me on albuterol pills, and sent me home to be on strict bed rest.
Two weeks later, at 36 weeks I was taken off the medication and bed rest on my 19th Birthday. Three days later I gave birth to a healthy, 6 lbs 7 oz baby girl. I am so thankful that my doctor knew about GBS. My only wish was that I had been more informed about the condition myself.
