Aspen was born 12/21/17 after a quick birth. She is our 6th child and right away when she latched on, I could tell something was not right. She failed the hearing screen the next morning. Didn't nurse well all day. Failed a second hearing screen on 12/23 and after attempting to nurse her again w/no luck, she felt warm to me, she was grunting, and she had retractions.
They moved her to special care. That night she had her first seizure lasting 11 mins, then a few others. She was transferred to another facility with a NICU. Lumbar puncture (LP) was done next day, we witness a seizure as she was being set up for EEG. Aspen was diagnosed with GBS septicemia and meningitis. Seizures were under control. A PICC line was placed so she could do 21 days of antibiotics once we got the first clean LP, it took 2 more after the initial.
She came home after spending 28 days in the NICU. She developed a small cerebellar bleed before being discharged that was followed up outpatient. She is almost 2 now and has therapy 4 times a week but is progressing well.
