My personal experience with my son underscores the importance of raising awareness about GBS and the need for early detection and prevention.
My son, born on December 6, 2021, exhibited concerning symptoms from day one. He was unusually cranky, refused to feed, and slept excessively. Over the next few days, his condition deteriorated, with blue discoloration around his eyes and mouth. When he failed to wake up from a nap and had a seizure in his father's arms, we rushed him to the hospital. At just seven days old, he had experienced a severe oxygen deprivation event.
After a week of tests and uncertainty, the doctors diagnosed my son with GBS. The discovery was both shocking and devastating. It was a relief to finally have an explanation for his symptoms, but it also brought a deep sense of guilt and regret.
While my son's recovery was a long and challenging process, his story serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences GBS can have. By raising awareness about this condition and promoting early detection and prevention, we can help protect newborns and ensure their health and well-being.

Group B Strep: A Silent Threat
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in newborns. Despite its potential severity, many people are unaware of this condition.
Had I known about GBS and its potential risks, I might have been able to seek earlier medical attention and prevent this ordeal.
My experience highlights the importance of educating expectant mothers about GBS. By understanding the risks and symptoms, women can make informed decisions about their healthcare and take preventive measures. Routine prenatal testing for GBS can help identify carriers and allow for appropriate treatment during labor to reduce the risk of transmission to newborns.
