Hello, it has taken me a few months to share my story, but I am ready to share our family’s tragic experience with GBS in hopes that it can help or bring comfort to someone. Our family’s experience with GBS is rare as it has affected both of our children.
Our son, Matthew, was born in November of 2023. I had to be induced at 41 weeks and 5 days and his labor took 17 hours. Luckily, I did receive antibiotics for his birth and he was born a healthy, almost 9 pound baby. For the first 10 days of his life he was healthy, always hungry, and could wake the neighbors with his cries when he wanted more food. At 10 days old however, he wouldn’t cry, turned pale, began grunting with each breath, and had green-yellow colored bubbles coming out of his mouth. My husband and I rushed him to the emergency room where the doctors agreed he was sick and began antibiotics immediately. To their surprise given my antibiotics during labor, Matthew had a GBS sepsis infection. We were so blessed that we caught the infection when we did and it had not progressed to meningitis. Matthew received a 10 day antibiotic treatment in the NICU and has been a healthy boy ever since.
A year and a half later, my husband and I became pregnant with our daughter, Cassie.

I have talked with multiple doctors at multiple hospitals who were involved in our daughters care about how the standard of care was insufficient for my daughter with respect to my medical history.
