The mission of Group B Strep International (GBSI) is to promote international awareness and prevention of Group B Strep (GBS) disease in babies before birth through early infancy. The scope of our mission includes actively supporting the GBS awareness and prevention efforts of individuals and organizations on a community or national level as well as developing GBS awareness and prevention resources for countries that do not have an active program readily available. One of our main goals is to be a central resource for GBS information in a variety of languages for both the general public and medical professionals.
Group B Strep International was formed in April 2006 by John MacDonald and Marti Perhach who each lost a daughter to group B strep (GBS). Both John and Pam MacDonald’s daughter, Hannah, and Chris and Marti Perhach’s daughter, Rose, were stillborn full-term. (Read Hannah’s story here; read Rose’s story here.) Both deaths were preventable, inspiring John and Marti to promote GBS awareness and prevention first on a national level throughout the United States with The Jesse Cause. Group B Strep International was then founded as a sister organization to expand the scope and the audience of this campaign. The efforts of Marti, John, and many other dedicated volunteers have been rewarded with substantial progress over the last few years:
July has been designated International Group B Strep Awareness Month on the US National Health Observance Calendar, sponsored by GBSI.
February has been designated International Prenatal Infection Prevention Month on the US National Health Observance Calendar, sponsored by GBSI.
The term “prenatal-onset” GBS disease (including miscarriages and stillbirths) has been recognized by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the November 19, 2010/Vol. 59/No. RR-10 MMWR on page 23.
October has been designated Prenatal-onset GBS Disease Recognition Month, sponsored by GBSI.
GBSI is a non-profit public benefit corporation under the State of California and welcomes your support in our campaign to promote GBS disease awareness and prevention around the world, in memory and honor of all the babies who have been infected by GBS.
